Student Competition Winner 2018

What a competition!

We have been completely thrilled with the student competition entries we had this year. There was such a variety of design styles and subjects that the team enthusiastically followed through the processing stage. The judging became quite a task as the short listed entries were ‘discussed’ at length.

Winning DesignWe are delighted to announce that the winner this year is:

Sarah Wilkinson
Bath Spa University

Inspiration for the imagery came on a trip to the RHS show at Hampton Court where Alliums caught Sarah’s attention.  She also found inspiration in a field full of dandelion heads, some half blown away.

“I found the contrast of the part transparent, part seeded head beautiful. So decided to combine the allium and effect of the dandelions transparency. The boarder is actually inspired from patterns on a butterfly wing that I photographed again at Hampton court.”

Here’s what we thought! The depth of the design was highlighted with intricate layered detailing. Combining spot bold abstract colour with delicate silhouetted seed heads, provided a contrast in design style all within the same pattern. The complimentary border was reflected within the main repeat pattern by introducing elements of it to highlight the shape of leaves. The printed Silk Satin enhanced the imagery as the lustre caught details within the pattern. We would also love to see this design in different colour ways, expanding opportunities for it’s use.  Our photography doesn’t do the artwork and printed silk justice. Technically the design was submitted accurately. Taking into mind the restraints of constructing repeat pattern and the complimentary border for digital print the file was saved to the correct specifications, including the resolution and size. In conclusion it was imaginative, beautifully executed and resulted in an exquisite printed fabric. Congratulations Sarah.

Here are just a very small sample of some of the other entries we received being printed.
